The Horizon2020-funded project ICCEE aims at improving energy efficiency in the cold chain of the food and beverage sector, and making it easier for the sector to undertake EE measures across the entire supply chain and accelerate the implementation of energy audit results.
To achieve these objectives, a thorough analysis of the supply chain energy performance (and the parameters influencing it) was needed, to understand where the energy consumption comes from and how to reduce it at the different stages of the F&B supply chain. Food production processes rely on multiple inputs of raw materials processed in several steps over the supply chain.
This report from UNIBS therefore maps energy flows and defines the boundaries of the cold chains of different products, including details on the temperatures and actors from different stages, involved in the goods production and supply.
It also includes a model, supporting the analysis of energy consumption through the supply chain, determined by the refrigeration requirements of both storage and transport activities, as well as quality losses.
Finally, best practices of energy efficiency measures (EEMs) to improve the energy performance of the supply chain are investigated and case studies provided for each.
This exercise allows defining priorities among: improvement of supply chain energy efficiency through supply chain and operations management, new energy efficiency technologies and advanced maintenance and refurbishment of currently installed equipment for both the core processes and the auxiliary services, such as transportation equipment and refrigerants.
